Data collection, computation and display are achieved using proprietary software supplied by Axel Metrology. The PC supplied as standard with the microscope incorporates motor control electronics which in conjunction with the software provides the microscope with the ability to carry out a wide range of functions, including:

• Measurement of three dimensional distances and spatial angles.
  
• Multiple point plane and line fitting.
  
• Recording of sections and contours.
  
• Geometric comparison of similar shapes.
  
• Export of data to other applications.
  
• Semi-automatic profiling. 

Operation 
Movement in the three axes is controlled by a single joystick which also incorporates a speed change button. The "point enter" button is mounted on the joystick console, allowing convenient single-handed operation of the microscope. Light spot size can be chosen to suit the selected magnification. 

Software Motor Control 
The dynamical properties of the system are controlled via software commands which are preset before delivery of the instrument. However, these can be changed by the user if required. 

Calibration 
Before delivery, calibration data is included in a software file and automatically corrects the measured co-ordinates. 

Software Versatility 
The software package was designed originally for industrial metrology, and is capable of carrying out a wide range of functions normally associated with co-ordinate measuring machines (CMM). Thus the Reflex Microscope can be used as a small CMM for industrial inspection and control, as well as its more traditional applications in research laboratories.
